Star Foundation offers summer camp

Star Foundation Announces the Fun in the Sun Summer Camp
Offering Full Day Camp for Durham/Raleigh Kids

Star Foundation, a non-profit community outreach and youth mentoring program in Durham, NC, is offering a full-day summer camp program for 10 weeks to residents of Durham community.

“Our focus is on at-risk children who normally would not get to go to camp because of financial restraints or other economic factors. But we welcome all children who don’t have a summer camp to attend,” says Laurel Nicolosi, Media Specialist/Education Coordinator for Star Foundation.

The Fun in the Sun Summer Camp is being held at Zafa Temple #176 (Shriners Club), located at 2312 South Alston Avenue in Durham, NC from June 15 to Aug. 21. The program provides opportunities for participants to discover and develop their individual talent. The program also provides the children with exposure to a diversity of cultures, through the World Wide Web, that will help them to understand today’s global world. Morning classes will focus on academics such as reading, creative writing, math, and science projects such as “Going Green”. The afternoon classes will focus on the creative side, with planned arts and crafts events, including jewelry making, along with classes in dance and theater.

The Star Foundation believes that all youth if given the proper guidance and encouragement will become the next 'Super Stars' of our community. They further believe that all children have outstanding talent and should have equal opportunities to promote that talent. All children should have the chance at success no matter what their ethnic, financial, or personal circumstances.

In past years, Star Foundation has used the power of television and radio to obtain the attention of prospective mentors, and community supporters. Community Outreach Projects such as Talent Showcases and Community Outreach Programs bring much needed services to the community in this area of North Carolina. Star Foundation is interested in partnering with other community programs for fundraising events, which will provide access to local, state, federal, and corporate dollars needed to continue their mentoring and education programs.

Star Foundation’s upcoming community event the “Fun In The Sun Fun-Raiser” is scheduled for June 27, from 1 to 5 p.m., at Zafa Temple. This festival will help raise much needed funds for the summer camp. Chloe’s Restaurant will be providing the food. Father Son and Soul will be giving a live concert and DJ Silk will keep the music going all afternoon long. Local athletes from Duke and Shaw will be signing autographs for kids. Admission is a $10 donation to Star Foundation per family/car and parking is free.

For more information, contact Joyce Waller, President and CEO of Star Foundation, by phone at (919) 251-3037, or go to
