Carolina Parent Announces Winner of "Mother's and Father's Day" Contest

Congratulations to Dan Van Veen who won our Mother's and Father's Day" contest by writing in to tell us the best advice his parents ever gave him. His winning essay follows:

My parents have always given me sound advice. The most interesting being,"Remember, whatever you do, one day, when you have children, it will begiven back to you -- good or bad."

That little tidbit of advice kept me from a number of poor decisions as wel las encouraged me to be more thoughtful and helpful. As a boy who believed one day having children of my own would be awesome, this affected my life.

As a father, I now realize that the importance of that advice wasn't that it was some "magic" formula, but that it shaped me -- it shaped who I became and therefore, shapes who my children are becoming. In other words, along with being a father, I am a role model who seeks to create in his children the proper respect and/or love for God, family, authority, environment and, what so many fail to teach, love and respect for ourselves.

I hope that one day that my children will take these same words of wisdom and one day realize their responsibilities to the future.
